14.1.1 Fires and Explosions

UST Systems that have tanks used for the storage of flammable liquids can contain vapors that easily ignite when mixed with air. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code 30 specifies design requirements for tanks used for the storage of flammable liquids.

If a UST system fails to meet the design requirements of NFPA 30, significant fire and explosion hazards may occur during the tank operation and/or maintenance of the UST System.

As the Class A or Class B operator you must verify whether each tank meets the requirements of NFPA 30. You can obtain this information from the UST owner or the manufacturer of the storage tank.

This information will help developing and implementing safe practices for fire prevention and control that are appropriate for the liquid being stored in the tanks, and the type of operational service for which those tanks are used on a day-by-day basis.

Additional information can also be found in the Petroleum Equipment Institute recommended practice RP900 - “Recommended Practices for the Inspection and Maintenance of UST Systems.”
