14.1.2 Hazardous Substance Exposure

Operating a UST system may involve handling a hazardous substance - especially during incidents involving emergency response.

Improper exposure to a hazardous substance can endanger the health and safety of the person and others in nearby proximity.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) specifies the exposure level for hazardous substances in their standard 1910.1000 (“Permissible Exposure Levels”).

OHSA regulations provide specific requirements for meeting the requirements of 1910.1000.   They can be found under Part 1910.1200 - Hazard Communication (HAZCOM).

HAZCOM includes requirements for:

1.          Material Safety Data Sheets

2.          Labeling of containers for storing hazardous substances
