188.8.131.52 Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are designed to provide exposure and handling information about substances judged hazardous to the health and safety of human beings. MSDS can be obtained from the manufacturer of the hazardous substance. MSDS contain the following information:
1. Name of the manufacturer.
2. Hazardous ingredients.
3. Health hazards.
4. Chemical and physical properties.
5. Special precautions
6. Storage requirements.
7. Environmental considerations.
Note: The health hazard determination is performed by the manufacturer or importer of the hazardous material.
As the Class A or Class B operator you must verify that Class C operators, as well as other on-site UST facility personnel have ready access to MSDS and understand how to read and interpret the information contained within MSDS.
You must also verify that they have read and understand the hazards associated with the substances stored in the USTs located at the facility where they work. This includes understanding any requirements pertaining to the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) discussed in section 2 of this chapter after this Safe Practices section.
