Warning!

Tank decommissioning is perhaps the most dangerous aspect of managing UST systems.

Multiple serious injuries and fatalities have occurred due to the hazards related to the closure and removal of tanks. These accidents occur suddenly with little or no warning.

Accidents during tank decommissioning are often the result of failure by people to follow proper safety precautions - oftentimes because of:

         overconfidence

lack of knowledge about the related hazards, or

         simple carelessness

Underground storage tank (USTs) systems that store hazardous chemicals and petroleum products can present serious hazardous conditions because of the combustibility, flammability and/or toxicity of the stored liquids.
